From Equipment to Impact: Gardyn Professional Development & SparX Academy
Building Confidence Through Professional Learning
For many schools and nonprofit organizations, acquiring innovative classroom technology is only the first step. The real transformation happens when educators feel confident using that technology to create meaningful learning experiences.
That was the challenge facing R&D Impact's SparX Academy, a nonprofit organization serving underserved youth in Kensington, Pennsylvania. Through free after-school and summer STEM programs, SparX Academy provides students with hands-on learning opportunities that spark curiosity, build critical thinking skills, and introduce career pathways in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
When the organization received several Gardyn hydroponic growing systems from a sister SparX Academy location in California, staff were excited to expand their programming. But after the devices arrived, they quickly realized they needed more than equipment to bring their vision to life.
Through responsive technical support and Gardyn for Schools' first Professional Development workshop, SparX Academy transformed those systems into engaging STEM learning environments—and demonstrated the importance of investing in educators alongside educational technology.
The Challenge: Great Technology Needs Great Training
The Gardyn systems presented some challenges that made implementation difficult. Although staff were eager to begin using the devices, several barriers stood in the way:
- Limited experience with routine maintenance
- Uncertainty about incorporating hydroponics into educational programming
- Low confidence troubleshooting technical issues
After some testing, it became clear that having access to innovative technology wasn't enough. Staff needed training, confidence, and instructional strategies to use the systems effectively with students.
SparX Academy reached out to Gardyn for Schools for support.
The Solution: Technical Support Meets Professional Development
Gardyn's first priority was ensuring the equipment was fully functional. After identifying the missing components during the device transfer, replacement parts were shipped so every system could be assembled and operated successfully.
From there, the partnership shifted beyond technical support.
Recognizing that educator confidence is essential for long-term success, Gardyn for Schools designed and delivered its first full-day Professional Development workshop for SparX Academy educators and program facilitators.
Rather than focusing only on operating the technology, the workshop emphasized how to transform the Gardyn into a year-round instructional tool that supports inquiry, collaboration, and authentic STEM learning.
Training topics included:
- Introduction to hydroponics and the Gardyn ecosystem
- Understanding the Gardyn 4.0 system and its components
- Educator and student interaction with the technology
- Proper SOW techniques using yCubes and yPods
- Germination timelines and early plant development
- Harvesting best practices
- Routine maintenance and preventative care
- Troubleshooting common issues
- Curriculum integration across STEM, Career and Technical Education (CTAE), and expanded learning programs
- Participation in a model lesson demonstrating inquiry-based instruction with the Gardyn system
The result was a learning experience that equipped educators not only to maintain the systems but also to confidently facilitate engaging, hands-on STEM lessons.
Measuring Success
To evaluate the effectiveness of the professional development, participants completed the same assessment before and after the workshop.
The assessment measured knowledge and confidence in:
- Basic hydroponic principles
- Gardyn operations
- Routine maintenance
- Plant care and growth cycles
- Sowing and germination procedures
- Nutrient management
- Classroom implementation strategies
Before the Workshop
Participants entered the training with an average score of 70%.
While many educators had a foundational understanding of plant science and hydroponics, they were less confident operating the Gardyn system and incorporating it into student learning experiences.
After the Workshop
Following a full day of demonstrations, guided practice, collaborative learning, and instructional modeling, participants demonstrated significant growth.
Average assessment scores increased to 95%, representing a 25 percentage-point improvement in both knowledge and confidence.
By the end of the workshop, educators were able to:
- Confidently operate the Gardyn 4.0 system
- Perform routine maintenance independently
- Demonstrate proper sowing techniques using yCubes and yPods
- Explain the plant growth cycle from germination through harvest
- Troubleshoot common operational issues
- Integrate hydroponics into STEM, CTAE, and after-school programming
- Facilitate inquiry-based, hands-on learning using the Gardyn system
More importantly, participants left prepared to independently manage their Gardyns and create engaging experiences for the students they serve.
Beyond Technology: Creating Lasting Educational Impact
The partnership between Gardyn for Schools and SparX Academy highlights an important lesson for educational organizations: successful implementation requires more than innovative equipment.
Educators need the confidence to troubleshoot challenges, the instructional strategies to connect technology to learning objectives, and the ongoing support to sustain meaningful classroom experiences.
By combining responsive technical support with comprehensive professional development, Gardyn for Schools helped transform a collection of underutilized growing systems into powerful instructional tools.
Today, R&D Impact's staff are equipped to engage underserved youth in authentic, project-based learning centered around plant science, engineering, sustainability, food systems, and career exploration. Students don't simply learn about hydroponics—they investigate living systems, collect data, solve real-world problems, and experience STEM through hands-on discovery.
Why Professional Development Matters
Educational technology delivers its greatest value when educators feel empowered to use it with confidence.
Gardyn for Schools Professional Development is designed to help schools and organizations move beyond setup and maintenance to fully integrate indoor hydroponic gardens into STEM instruction, career readiness, nutrition education, and project-based learning.
Whether supporting classroom teachers, after-school educators, or nonprofit organizations, our goal is the same: helping educators cultivate engaging learning experiences that grow both plants and student potential.
